This orange-peach shade is reminiscent of actual sea coral and Pantone says it’s about reconnecting with our natural world in a warm, optimistic way.

For 20 years, Pantone’s Color of the Year has been heralded as influencing product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, and industrial design, as well as product, packaging, and graphic design.

Is it all just an ingenious marketing campaign, or does the Colour of the Year deserve creative people’s attention?

At Ivoryred, we’re not convinced. We’d like to think that the very essence of being a creative is to play with colour and design to support a brief, rather than buying into one key shade for the year. But at the same time, we’re all influenced by the world around us: trends, connections and styles. Coral has already been popular throughout 2018. Perhaps the Pantone Color of the Year should be reflective, looking back at what has been the colour of the year, rather than trying to predict the future and potentially steer the course of designers around the world.

Only time will tell. We can’t say it’ll be at the forefront of our minds, but maybe this time next year we will see if Living Coral has made its way into any of our designs.
